Metamorphosis: A Review

In this South Korean horror movie, a shape-shifting demon infiltrates the lives of a small family. Directed by "The Chase" director, Kim Hong-sun, and starring Sung Dong-il and Bae Sung-woo.

"Metamorphosis" follows Gang-goo (Dong-il), who moved to a new house with his family following the backlash brought to them by his brother's, Jong-soo (Bae Sung-woo), failed exorcism. The shockwave of the incident not only forces them to move to a new neighborhood, but it also divided Gang-goo's family. As he tries to keep everything together, he soon realized that the demon Jong-soo fails to expel is hiding among them.

"Metamorphosis" shows that evil has many faces. It's a creative illustration of how ignorance creates separation and indifference.

Kim Hong-sun's exorcism film thrives from its concept to its chilling production design and incredible performances by its casts. Sung Dong-il is a sure standout. His portrayal of an emphatic father willing to sacrifice everything for his wife and children is not just articulate but also hair-raising.

Subsequently, "Metamorphosis" is not a lazy film but, it looks and feels bewildered by its story. I find Hong-sun's attempt to tell two storylines simultaneously ineffective and confusing. The crisscrossing narrative leads to scattered emotional investments toward the characters and a superficial sense of danger.

Hong-sun fails to capture the soul of the story and translate it into the film. Yes, it might invite immersion in decrypting why and who the real demon is in some scene, but it would not let us guess for long.

To me, this can never be more generic than what is. All that transpired in its run appeared in countless films. Besides, there's a myriad of movies about demon possession already. "Metamorphosis" is not in any form 'special' compared to all of it.

"Metamorphosis" may sound like a compelling horror film. But, don't be deceived by the impressive casts, good production design, and a story that sounds good on paper. This movie lacks the proper direction to be fully immersive and unforgettable.
