In the future, buildings in Thailand have artificial intelligence that allows them to talk to humans and work together with them.
Lana (Pimchanok "Baifern" Leuwisetpaiboon) is a young professional who has been meeting with guys for years in the hopes of finding the one. The only one who has been kind to her so far is Dob, the AI of their office building. Some of the kindness he does for her is to greets her every morning, asks how she is doing, and assists her with her presentation.
Dob loves Lana, but she’s not convinced. AIs are incapable of loving someone. It’s just not in their system.
One day, the office manager notices that Dob is acting strangely. So they enlisted the help of Bob (Mario Maurer), a seasoned programmer, to reprogram the AI. But rather than resetting the system, Dob downloaded himself into Bob, taking control of his body and mind.
Finally human, Dob seeks out Lana to show her how much he loves her.
This Netflix movie is frequently referred to as a "modern" love story. And, to be fair, it does touch on some interesting, albeit unoriginal, ideas about technology and relationships.
"AI Love You" essentially explores the definition of love in the modern world. It argues that perhaps love is all just a complex system of thought and expression. Love may be a product of effort and choice. But whatever it is, the film asserts that it is beyond the realm of emotions.
Besides the overt exploration of the nature of love, "AI Love You" subtly alludes to our overdependence on technology. Lana and other characters use various software and machines to accomplish even the most basic tasks throughout the film. People in this world have embraced technology to the point that it appears they’re unable to live without it.
However, this study on technology only looks at the most superficial aspects of it. It only floats in a sea of philosophies and ideologies about the core theme of the film. You will, without a doubt, be disappointed if you watch this film for its insight. Movies like "Deus Ex Machina" and "Her" have more compelling thoughts on machines, AI, and technology.
The pairing of Mario Maurer and Pimchanok Leuwisetpaiboon is probably the only reason to watch this Thai movie. They have an undeniable chemistry together, and the cheesy moments they share in the film will really send butterflies in your stomach. Their love team has been tested before. They worked together on the sleeper hit "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and have become a sensation. Since then, they've starred in a number of successful Thai films, including "Friend Zone" and "Pee Mak."
"AI Love You" is an unoriginal rom-com that might be enjoyable to watch with friends during a lazy evening. Maurer and Leuwisetpaiboon are a romantic and exciting couple, and I suppose that's the one positive thing to anticipate in the movie. But overall, it doesn't delve deeply into its premise, and most of the time, it settles on cheap-sweet moments to remain interesting.
