Enchanted: Movie Review

Amy Adams, Susan Sarandon, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden in Enchanted Movie Poster
Disney spiced up their fairy tale game through this wonderful rom-com drama about a princess lost in New York City.

The film follows Giselle (Amy Adams), a young woman living in the fictional world of Andalasia, who is bound to marry Prince Edward (James Marsden) after sharing a romantic duet about true love's kiss.

Afraid that she would lose her right to the throne, Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon), an evil witch, pushed Giselle into a well to a place where, as they explained, "no happily ever after."

Lost and confused, Giselle accidentally met the cynical divorce attorney, Robert Philips (Patrick Dempsey), who agreed to help her until Prince Edward came to her rescue.

As the two spend some time together, Queen Narissa is becoming more determined to kill Giselle, Prince Edward gets lost in New York, and Robert and Giselle's feelings are becoming deeper.

Movies based on fairy tales work differently than other types of movies.

Every fairy tale is formulaic and predictive; every viewer knows the drill. It starts with the prince charming's arrival to save a damsel in distress, cursed by an evil witch whose only true love's kiss can break it. The prince will kiss the young woman and marry her, and they will live happily ever after. In between is a lot of singing and talking to animals. These scenarios are typical of fairy tale movies, and it can be exhausting to see the same storyline over and over again.

However, in this film directed by Disney veteran Kevin Lima, fairy tales are twisted and satirized into a fresh story of a prince, an evil witch, a beautiful lady, and New York City.

"Enchanted" is one of those movies wherein reality and fantasy coincide in a linear story. "Straight out of a fairy tale" is not an understatement, the movie genuinely feels like a fairy tale!

The performances of Adams and Marsden stand out from all the rest. They aced the characters of Giselle and Prince Edward, respectively. From their outrageous dispositions to their high-spirited enthusiasm, they effortlessly carried out all the characteristics of a Disney prince and princess perfectly.

The costumes are all magnificently made as well. The script can make you feel like you are in a romantic comedy and a Disney movie at the same time.

The songs used in the movie captured the "magic" we are all looking for in a Disney movie. The legendary Alan Menkin scored the film, and just like his other works, he surely hit the tone of the movie. The songs "That's How You Know," "Happy Working Song," and "So Close" are played perfectly and will eventually get you singing your heart out afterwards.

All in all, "Enchanted" is a smart and fun Disney movie filled with all those magical feelings. It will make you fall in love with its tenderness and spirit, and when the film ends, you will believe that life can indeed end happily ever after.
